Apartments
There are no dormitories or student accommodations at Josai University, so overseas students must their own accommodation. The university can provide information about convenient and safe apartments. Finding an environment where you can concentrate on your studies is a very important aspect of your life away from home. You might need to get used to sharing accommodation with others, and it’s important to maintain a regular lifestyle.
Medical Fees for Overseas Students
Medical treatment in Japan is very expensive. National Health Insurance is compulsory for overseas students staying in Japan for more than one year. Through National Health Insurance, you can significantly reduce the cost of treatment in case of illness or accidents.
Joining the National Health Insurance program is carried out at the city hall (ward office) where you registered as a foreign resident. Please present your alien registration card at the window for National Health Insurance and fill out the form. You will then receive a National Health Insurance card. There is a monthly fee for the National Health Insurance program. If you present your National Health Insurance card when you receive medical treatment, your will receive a 70% discount on your medical fees.
Part-Time Work
Owing to their status of residence, to do a part-time job overseas students require special permission, called “shikakugai katsudoh kyoka”, or “Permission to Engage in an Activity Other Than That Permitted by the Status of Residence Previously Granted”, in order to be able to engage in activities beyond those covered by their visa. Shikakugai katsudoh kyoka is obtained from the Immigration Office. If granted, it will allow you to work up to 28 hours a week (up to 8 hours a day during vacation).
Procedure for Registering as a Foreign Resident
Foreign residents must register at their local city hall (ward office) and obtain an alien registration card within 90 days of the day of arrival in Japan.
In the event that there should be any change of circumstances after the time of registration (e.g. change of status of residence, change of period of residence, change of address), the change needs to be registered within 14 days.
Scholarship System
In an expensive country like Japan, whether or not you have a scholarship can make a big difference to how well you are able to get on with your studies. Broadly speaking, scholarships are divided into two types: scholarships you apply for through the university, and individual scholarships you can apply for directly.
In the case of students on the Special Program for Overseas Students, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology offers a scholarship (subsidy) for students with an outstanding academic record. Last year, one such student received 50,000 yen each month for the whole year.
