New developments at the Department of Chemistry

Chemistry provides the foundation for the Department of Chemistry at Josai University’s Faculty of Science, but the department is expanding to nanotechnology, advanced materials, and the fields of new energy. How about studying the basics of chemistry through cutting- edge chemistry?
 
In April 2012, the Department of Chemistry at Josai University’s Faculty of Science welcomed seven new instructors to beef up the faculty and respond to the demands of students. In the research field, nanotechnology, advanced materials and new energies are undergoing a dynamic expansion.
Through these cutting-edge fields, The Department is training the human resources for 21st century
society through carefully structured education.
The expansion is aimed at cutting-edge nanotechnology  and advanced materials in the field of
chemistry, as well as the new energy field, which  is now attracting worldwide attention. The courses also consider ecosystems impact from an eco-friendly perspective.
Chemistry is the basis of manufacturing. For example, by making magnets from organic photovoltaics
and organic molecules, the university is promoting an education in manufacturing that is based on cutting-edge research. We have expanded and enhanced education and research by setting up new groups that straddle the materials and information sciences, synthetic chemistry and life sciences.

Passing the national examination for Hazardous Materials Engineers

After they graduate, many students, who have conducted experiments and done lab work while enrolled at the Department of Chemistry, also work in jobs where they handle hazardous materials (pharmaceuticals) classified under the Fire Service Act.

In the classes on Material Handling Technology…

Hazardous Materials Engineer, Poisonous and Deleterious Substances Engineer, and High Pressure Gas Safety Engineer are some of the qualifications required when working at a chemical company. Among them, the Hazardous Materials Engineer qualification is an absolute requirement. There are first class and second class qualifications for Hazardous Materials Engineers. To take the example of the first class qualifications, the pass rate is only about one third even among chemistry students who study seriously for the exam. Students who have enrolled at university to study chemistry have an advantage.

Performance in the biotechnology engineering examination

The Japan Association of Biotechnology Education organizes the qualification to certify the engineers that are needed as the bio industry expands. The department incorporates specific content designed to obtain the certification in the courses on biochemistry, molecular biology and biotechnology, which are the subjects covered by the certification exam, and we also explain the context for exam questions.
