History and tradition and for "a bright-future creation"

In 1965, Josai University was established in Keyaki-Dai, Sakado City, in Saitama Prefecture. In the time since then, JU has seen society rapidly changing as it made its transition from the Showa period to the Heisei period and from the 20th century to the 21st century.
The First Chancellor and President, the late Mr. Mikio Mizuta, was a statesman who devoted himself to Japan's postwar rehabilitation from the devastation caused by its defeat. As the founder of the present university as well as Josai University Educational Corporation, he believed that, for Japan to become truly rehabilitated and developed, it was most important to nurture the capable young people who would be able to bear the future burden for Japan. Thus, under the founder's school motto of 'character building through learning,' JU was founded with a view to educating the 'youth of a promising future.' Having supported the founder's great ambition, and having made unsparing endeavors to bring it to fruition, many faculty members, many other supporters, and whatis more, the over 60,000 Josai graduates, who have managed to succeed and make many contributions to society, have laid the foundation of the university. JU owes what it is today to their over 40 years of untiring efforts.
Since its founding, JU has continued to expand, establishing another department and a junior college. Subsequently, Josai International University was founded as an innovation responding to the age of globalization. And last year, another new campus of an urban style was opened in Kioicho, Tokyo, where we offer education that is ahead of the times in meeting community needs.
Further, cooperating with the local public body, Josai Healthy Citizen University was started this year, contributing the educational assets of the university to forming a vital local community and facilitating improvements in health. Also, JU concluded an academic exchange agreement with Ewha Women's University (Korea), Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (Korea), and Bath Spa University (Britain), increasing the number of its sister schools in order to further globalize the educational environment.
With the increasing globalization of society, it is an even more important task for us in the 21st century to realize the 'character building through learning' evoked in the spiritual legacy of JU. We believe it to be the university's main educational mission to encourage every JU graduate to live fulfilling lives and do their best to create a peaceful, productive future society and culture which have no social or racial boundaries.
Every day at JU, the best possible care is being taken to provide the young men and women who are to shoulder demands of the 21st century with superb educational programs and environments to be able to tap his/her own potential, to hone his/her own personality and to develop his/her own ability so that he/she may be of service to society. By all means, I hope from the bottom of my heart that all of you, as many of you as possible, will knock at the door of JU and be educated to become capable youth who can contribute to the "creation of a bright future".

JU students make a contribution toward building a stable and stable society

Josai University was established in 1965 based on the belief that its educational objective is not just teaching, but helping to form individuals that can actively participate in modern society. Since then, the atmosphere created by our young students has been the driving force toward realizing our school motto: “Character building through education.” Again this year, Josai University faculties, graduate school, junior college and Japanese study program welcomed a large number of new students with different backgrounds to the Sakado Campus and a new vibrant year has started.

As I emphasized in this year’s opening ceremony, I encourage all of you to aim to be a specialist as much as a generalist. In order to achieve that while studying at Josai University, first, try to speak Japanese properly, clearly and with purpose. Second, try to master at least one foreign language. Third, try to be eager to learn.
We have tried hard to ease your work by making available all possible lots facilities and so, we expect you to try hard to achieve your goals.

The prospect of 21st century will not appear if thinking is not followed by action. We need new ideas to use our limited resources and spaces wisely. At Josai University, we are developing our programs day by day in hope of contribution to globalization to get there. We expect the generalist and specialist graduated at this university to use their knowledge with courage and confidence to form a sustainable society in the earth.
